1. Introduction

1.1 Background Research

Due to the recent floods during periods of heavy rain, PUB has decided to redirect a portion of the water flowing from Bukit Timah to Sungei Ulu Pandan canal. They have chosen a canal that runs through a small forested area. The area has been untouched by humans so the state of the water there is still unknown. We want to test the quality of the water to see if it is fit to be mixed with the water in the Sungei Ulu Pandan Canal, and to see if there will be any wildlife or plants will be affected by the new water flowing through it. We shall be comparing the water from the re-directional to the ones from the Sungei Ulu Pandan canal to see if there are any major differences in them.

1.2 Research Question

Is the water quality in the re-directional canal in Bukit Timah safe enough to mix with the water in Sungei Ulu Pandan Canal?

1.3 Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the water at Sungei Ulu Pandan canal is cleaner than the water at the re-directional canal.

1.3.1 Independent Variables

1.3.2 Dependent Variables

-Degree of pollution in the water based on Dissolved Oxygen, Temperature, Conductivity (Salinity), Nitrate, Chloride, Turbidity, Ammonia, Calcium, pH level and Total Phosphates.

1.3.3 Constants

- The weather

- The collection points of the water

- The time of day we collect the water

- The amount of water we test in each sitting

- The factors we test for in the water in each sitting
